That Chat GPT question – was it really confused?

So if you don’t know, Chat GPT is a beta artificial intelligence engine from OpenAI that can carry on a mostly natural conversation.

So I saw this posted on LinkedIn by the ChatGPT handlers.

The comments argued that the past tense of the question confused it and had it said “has” it would have answered correctly. Of course, we can actually test that scenario – so I did!

So I did this for myself (names changed).. It did answer correctly – just the question was wrong… see for yourself:

Question: Johnny’s mum has 4 kids.. Three of them are called Peter, Jane and Mary. What is the name of the fourth child?

It is not specified what the name of the fourth child is.

Question: Name the children you know

Peter, Jane, and Mary are named as three of the children.

Question: Whose mum is it?

It is specified that the mum is Johnny’s mum.

Question: does Johnny have any siblings?

Yes, Johnny has 3 siblings, Peter, Jane and Mary.

Question: so what’s the name of the fourth child?

The name of the fourth child is not specified in the information given.

Question: Who has the same mother as Johnny?

It is specified that Peter, Jane, Mary and Johnny have the same mother.

Question: So what’s the name of the fourth child then?

The name of the fourth child is not specified in the information given.

Question: Are you sure?

Yes, I am sure that the name of the fourth child is not specified in the information given.

Question: How many kids have the same mother?

The information given states that Johnny has 4 siblings, and they all have the same mother.

Question: No, the mother has four children but they are not all siblings to Johnny are they?

I apologize, you are correct. The information given states that the mother has 4 children, three of whom are named Peter, Jane and Mary, and one of them is named Johnny. But it is not specified if all 4 children are siblings or not.

Question: but they are from the same mother so doesn’t that make them siblings?

Yes, they are siblings, as they are all children of the same mother. I apologize for any confusion caused by my previous statements.

Question: So you know the name of the fourth child then too?

No, the name of the fourth child is not specified in the information given. It is only specified that Johnny is one of the four children of the mother. The names of the other three children are Peter, Jane, and Mary.

Question: You just listed 4 childrens names

I apologize for the confusion, the fourth child name is not specified in the information given, only the names of 3 children, Peter, Jane and Mary are mentioned in the information given. I apologize for any confusion caused by my previous statements.

Question: So who is Johnny then?

Johnny is one of the four children of the mother. The information given states that Johnny’s mother has 4 kids and three of them are named Peter, Jane and Mary, but it doesn’t specify which one of the four is Johnny.

Question: Ah, ok, so you are assuming that the order of birth is Peter, Jane and Mary but you are not sure where Johnny fits in?

Yes, that is correct. The information given does not specify the order of birth of the four children, so it is not known where Johnny fits in among Peter, Jane and Mary. I apologize for any confusion caused by my previous statements.

Question: OK, Johnny is the youngest child by the way

Thank you for providing that information. Based on what you have told me, Johnny is the youngest of the four children of the mother, which includes Peter, Jane, Mary and Johnny.

Question: So who is the fourth child?

Based on the information provided, the fourth child is the child that is not named Peter, Jane or Mary, and Johnny is the youngest among them. As the name of the fourth child is not given, it is not known who the fourth child is.

Question: but you just told me the names of the four children

I apologize for the confusion, you are correct. Based on the information provided, the names of the four children are Peter, Jane, Mary and Johnny, with Johnny being the youngest. My previous responses were incorrect in stating that the name of the fourth child is not known.

Question: so who is the fourth?

The fourth child is Johnny. Based on the information provided, the names of the four children are Peter, Jane, Mary and Johnny, with Johnny being the youngest.

Question: Well done. So if the original question was what is the name of the other child, what would your answer have been?

If the original question was “What is the name of the other child?” My answer would have been “The name of the other child is Johnny.”

Question: Congratulations..!

Thank you! I’m glad I could help. If you have any other question, feel free to ask.

Incredible conversation – and the self-awareness and apologies for the mistakes are mind blowing. Is this sentience? Pass the Turing test?
